Hi William
Alain here, the Berea CPF Sector 3 Chairman.
As you know by now, we are trying to "lift" the look of our area in order to combat degradation and disorder. It is a known fact that the link between maintaining civil order and preventing crime is similar to the process whereby "one broken window becomes many".
I am grateful that something has finally been done to sort out one of many irregular telephone connections (wires draped through trees and along grass verges) that lead to various households on the Berea. I am battling to decide whether the job is an improvement on what was before. I have the following problems with it.

I am battling to decide whether the job is an improvement on what was before. I have the following problems with it.
- the creosote gum poles are an ugly soloution and are not even put in straight. Surely, a pipe underground would have been the way to go? - the steel box on the pavement has been put back way out onto the pavement instead of up against the column/boundary. - the old "irregular/unsightly connection is still connected and lies trailing along the ground. - the steel box on the pavement still does not have it's tamper proof bolts put back and can be opened by anyone. - the pavement has not been re-tarred I am well aware that Telkom and the Municipality use sub-contractors to fulfill various services. It is for this reason that I am making you aware of the rather shoddy "solution" that has been implemented in this case making our area look tardier. |

Dear Mr Chauke
I wish I could be writing to tell you that, after one year of communications, the matter of irregular and unsightly telephone connections has been addressed- however I cannot.
This one, outside 449 Currie Rd, has still not been attended to. If no picture appears, click here or visit www.berea3.co.za to see it.
We, as Berea CPF, are working tirelessly with service providers such as the Engineers Departmant
and Parks Department to try and "lift" the look of our area in order to combat degradation and disorder.
It is a known fact that the link between maintaining civil order and preventing crime is similar to the
process whereby "one broken window becomes many".
Any help with the above would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards

Dear Mr Chauke
It's Mr Latham here again from the Berea Policing Forum Sector 3.
I haven't heard a word from anyone since your email sent to me on Jan 18 see below.
I can, however, report that nothing has been done to inspect/fix these connections. I would also like to inform that all correspondences are coppied to our website for all to view and monitor. The Berea Mail and Sunday Tribune is very interested to see how our latest drive to clean up the neighbourhood is supported by our various service providers.
Kind regards

Dear Sir,
We, of the Berea Policing Forum Sector 3, are of the view that the link between maintaining civil order and preventing crime is similar to the process whereby "one broken window becomes many".
It's a known fact that serious crime flourishes in areas in which disorderly behaviour and urban degradation go unchecked. It is for this reason that I am bringing to your attention the question of irregular and unsightly telephone connections, a point that was brought up by one of our members at our last meeting.
I have attached some pictures showing areas of Currie Rd where this is openly visible. Please can you reply telling us what Telkom's position and policy is on this matter as it is just one more "broken window" that is making our task as CPF just that little more difficult.
Kind Regards
Alain Latham
