Subject: Currie Rd Guardrail
Hi Ravin
I am delighted to report that work has commenced on the Currier Rd guard rail between Sydenham and Marriott- many thanks.
I'm a little worried that old rust is simply being painted over and that no rust converter is being used.
I am also concerned that the palisade opposite 451 will be overlooked as the resident there has done his own thing with it. The resident in question has his house for sale and is moving out of the area.
We, who are still going to living here for many years to come, would like it restored to its original style in order to conform with the rest of the street.
They are working very quickly so please respond with urgency. I am very willing to meet someone in the street to discuss the above.

Dear Thomas
I trust you are well. Happy New Year!
It is with regret that, despite your positive email sent to us on 26 October 2010, none of the following matters have been attended to:
- Polymer manhole lids not installed (Sydenham walkway north side) and along Currie Rd
- Dilapidated handrail- zero progress
-'Old' posts and rails on the north west corner of Currie/Marriot intersection still not
removed in fact this corner is a major eyesorecomplete with overgrown illicit vegetable
garden and general refuse.
- Guard rail installation in Musgrave Rd just before Norfolk Rd (never cemented into place/
in state of general disrepair still remains unattended to. We are having problems again
with crime and disorder.
A house in my sector of Currie Rd was burgled in broad daylight 2pm on Saturday 29th of January. I have been told that in the lanes below us (between Currie and Problem) there are prostitutes and drug dealers plying their trade into all hours of the night.
It's been 17 months since much of the above visible, physical degradation was first brought to your attention and, whilst some progress has been made, the general "class" of the area has reached a level where criminals, drug dealers and prostitutes feel "comfortable" that the area is one that is neglected and "below the radar" of residents and law enforcement officers.

Dear Mr Latham,
The dely in replying is regretted.
Please be advised that we will attend to the following matters:-
- We do use polymer concrete manhole lids and covers where we have problems with
theft of breakage due to heavy vehicles. Please advise on location so we can
investigate.
- A copy of this e-mail is being copied to Mr Keith McKinnon for any attention to the
request for street cleaning/sweeping of the pathway.
- The dilapidated handrail along Currie Rd between Marriott and Sydenham will be
refurbished and/or repaired.
- The replacement of the 'old' post and rails on the north west corner of Currie/Marriot

arrange to clean up the area and remove the old posts and rail.

Good Day Gentlemen,
As you are aware, I have been in correspondence with you since July 2009 regarding matters of degradation in our sector in the belief that crime flourishes in areas where disorderly behaviour and urban degradation go unchecked. It is now October 2010 and I thought It would be a good time to report back.
Sydenham Rd Sidewalk (between Currie and Musgrave- Northside)
Congratulations to all concerned for this piece of upgrade. The girls of DGC can now reuse this as their cross-country route in the early hours.
We still have a few problems with it and wondered if you could advise us on what can be done. I have a few ideas but wondered if they were practical and who would be the right people to deal with this.

-would it be possible to fit concrete or plastic manhole covers?
-could we request that a street cleaner cleans this sidewalk at least twice a week?
Report Back on Replacement of Guard Rail at Marriott/Currie Intersection
This started off well- we were extremely pleased. However, posts still lie strewn on the north west corner and the old rail has still not been removed as was agreed.
I thank you for getting the posts cemented in on adjacent corners and draw your attention to the same type of guard rail installation in Musgrave Rd just before Norfolk Rd (see below) where posts were never cemented into place and it now lies in a state of general disrepair.
I hope we are not being too petty and would like to congratulate you on efforts thus far- it is appreciated and helps to portray "The City" in a better light amongst residents who often bemoan service delivery.

There is a myriad of cables running quite shallow beneath the sidewalk and I went out to see the problem. The house on the corner is elevated and there is a sort of gabion retaining wall on the rising embankment. Please look at the accident stats and advise if we should pursue the guard-rail. Thanks Derek ----- Original Message ----- From: "Berea3 CPF" <berea3@webmail.co.za> To: "Derek Rogers" <Rogersd@durban.gov.za> Sent: Thursday, October 01, 2009 10:50 AM Subject: Currie Rd Guard Rail Hi Derek How are things going regarding the old Currie Rd guard rail. I have had a good look at it and concur that on the corner of Marriott and Currie (north east), that the purpose of the rail here is to keep the vehicles from falling of the roadway (also Currie & Milner), hence it's made of old tram lines. However, further down (from Marriott to Sydenham) as was pointed out to me at a recent meeting, this "lighter strength" guard rail is meant as a handrail for occupants of vehicles once they have parked to find their way to the various steps without falling off the edge onto the sidewalk lower down. If the rails are to keep the vehicles from falling of the roadway onto the sidewalk below, then it is the incorrect application for the pedestrian rails. The rails as they are very deadly and may cause fatalities when a car knocks them, and the rail goes into the cockpit and impales the passengers or driver. We should have guardrails here instead. We can get ETA to carry out an assessment in terms of the Council warrant for guardrails to see if it meets the warrant and then remove the rails completely. Below is the email originally sent. Our main issues are: - the missing "lower rails" and other missing pieces. - rusty weldings (joints) - breakages/improper repair to the concrete base - attractive and unform restoration along the entire street. - this must also be done to the piece of guardrail on the north side of the Marriott intersection. kindest regards Alain Latham Chairman Berea CPF Sector 3 ---- Original Message ----- From: Berea3 To: eservices@dmws.durban.gov.za Sent: Monday, August 24, 2009 11:51 AM Subject: State of Currie Rd Guard Rail Dear Sir We, of the Berea Policing Forum Sector 3, are of the view that the link between maintaining civil order and preventing crime is similar to the process whereby "one broken window becomes many". It's a known fact that serious crime flourishes in areas in which disorderly behaviour and urban degradation go unchecked. |

Please can you reply telling us what your departments position and policy is on this matter as it is just one more "broken window" that is making our task as CPF just that little more difficult.
